Valley News Dispatch roundup: Knoch boys hold off Freeport
Knoch's boys soccer team made a first-half goal hold up Thursday in a section-opening victory at Freeport.
Caleb Robb scored late in the opening 40-minute session and Knoch controlled possession for most of the second half in a 1-0 win over the Yellowjackets in the Section 2-AA opener for both teams.
Henry Palmer assisted the goal for the Knights (1-1-1, 1-0), and Stephen Grumski was the winning goalkeeper.
Freeport moved to 1-2, 0-1.
Springdale 3, Winchester Thurston 1 — Collin Hurley scored two goals and goalkeeper Mike Zolnierczyk made 10 saves to lead Springdale (2-2) to a nonsection upset over Class A No. 2 Winchester Thurston.
Nick Taliani had two assists for the Dynamos.
Riverview 1, Serra Catholic 1— Adam Walker's tying goal in the second half enabled Riverview (2-0-1) to come away with a nonsection tie against Serra Catholic. Substitute goalie Cal Fisher came on late in the second half and made six saves for the Raiders, and starter Kyle Moore made eight saves.
Burrell 1, Deer Lakes 0 — Alle Klems posted a shutout in goal with six saves, and Danika Ignozzi provided the lone goal for the Bucs (1-1, 1-0) in a Section 2-AA win over Deer Lakes (1-1, 0-1).
WCCA Tournament — With a 4-over-par 76, Kiski Area's Tim Collins was the A-K Valley's top finisher at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association golf tournament at Latrobe Elks Golf Club. Mark Goetz of The Kiski School won with a 74, winning a scorecard playoff over Brady Pevarnik of Latrobe.
Armstrong 4, Kiski Area 1 — Ashley Bowser and Lindsey Moore each won singles matches for Armstrong (2-2), which evened its record in Section 1-AAA. The River Hawks swept doubles. Aimee Pizarchik won her match in three sets for Kiski Area.
Knoch 3, Highlands 0 — Julie Zilka had 24 service points for Knoch (2-0, 2-0) in a Section 4-AAA win. Sarah Armahizer had nine kills to lead the Knights, and Taylor Lessesski contributed 11 service points.
Freeport 3, Valley 0 — Morgan Ruppersberger had 14 service points, six kills and three blocks to lead Class AA No. 1 Freeport (1-0, 1-0) to a section-opening win. Zoe Pawlak had 24 service points for the Yellowjackets, and Maggie Ward had 39 assists.
Riverview 3, St. Joseph 1 — Maggie Conte had 25 assists, and Ariel Rafferty contributed 10 kills and five blocks in a Section 1-A win. Candice Ashbaugh had seven kills for the Raiders. St. Joseph won the second set 26-24.
Fox Chapel 195, Penn Hills 273 — Alex Lawson shot 1-under 35 at Green Oaks Country Club for Fox Chapel in a Section 4-AAA win. James Braham, Mark Calandra and Pat Montreverde matched 39s for the Foxes (9-0, 8-0).
Freeport 207, West Shamokin 238 — At Buffalo Golf Course, Mickey Frazetta shot 2-over 38 to lead the Yellowjackets (8-1, 6-0) to a Section 1-AA win.
