Jeannette goalie Poth excited for Jayhawks' next step
Shawn Poth, a junior at Jeannette High School, has been playing soccer for around 10 years having gotten his start with the Jeannette Soccer Club as a boy.
Poth comes from a fairly athletic family. His mother, Christine Poth, has been a soccer coach and his sisters Rachel and Hannah also play soccer. In fact, Hannah and Shawn both play goalie for their respective teams.
“I'm just really good at goalie,” said Poth. “I feel like the game's on me. I get to control the ball when I get it.”
He said playing goalie isn't necessarily his favorite position but he feels like it's his spot because it's where he plays best.
“I'd play anywhere,” he said.
The boys' soccer season just wrapped up and it went really well for the Jayhawks who went 8-9 overall — which is a far cry from the 2012 team's 2-13 overall record.
“Last year, we only won two games. Our goal this year was to win more than two games and we were almost a .500 team. We just had that feeling this year that we can actually win,” said Poth.
“It was more fun. It wasn't those sad bus rides home. It was crazy.”
This year's team is a group that likes to have fun and has been playing together for many years. Playing together for so long has helped the team form a good on-field chemistry, Poth said. Next year's group will be a little younger as the team loses eight seniors.
“It will be interesting to see who comes up (from the middle school),” he said. “We need to find our new stars for next year.”
Poth will be a senior on next year's team and he's excited to see what the future holds for this group under the leadership of the new head coach, Mitchell Steele.
“We'll have more time to practice next year,” said Poth. “(Steele) is very motivational. He's just pumped up and ready to go. It gets everyone excited.”
Poth is also a baseball player for the Jayhawks and he is looking forward to his next sports season.
He is unsure of his plans after graduation. He's considering college and maybe a career in business. Poth said he's not positive that he'll continue to play sports after high school, but sports will likely always be something he enjoys because it's always played a large role in his life.
“I like playing. It's fun, something to do. It keeps me active and in shape,” he said.
Poth is the son of Christine and Shawn Poth. He has four sisters, Nicole, Courtney, Rachel and Hannah.
