Penguins' Casey DeSmith in goal Monday; Murray to get turn this week
Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said Casey DeSmith will be in goal Monday night against the Anaheim Ducks, but he said Matt Murray will get plenty of work this week, too.
“We really like Matt’s game,” Sullivan said Monday after the morning skate. “We thought he played real well the other night (making 38 saves in a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings). But having said that, Casey’s played extremely well, also.”
DeSmith made 48 saves in a 5-3 victory against the Boston Bruins on Friday.
Sullivan indicated he will use both goaltenders this week during a stretch in which the Penguins have four games in six nights. The team visits the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, returns home to play the Minnesota Wild on Thursday before traveling to Carolina for a game against the Hurricanes on Saturday.
Before Monday night, the Penguins had played eight games this month (5-2-1).
“We’re trying to keep them both at their best by keeping them well-rested and sharp,” Sullivan said. “And so looking at the big picture this week, both of them are going to get a significant amount of playing time.”
