Getting to know: Steelers punter Will Monday
Position: Punter Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 210 lbs.
No player has held the job as Steelers punter for two consecutive full seasons in the Mike Tomlin era — and Monday is out to extend that streak by unseating incumbent Jordan Berry. Berry, in turn, is hoping to win a camp battle for the second consecutive season after taking the job away from 2014 Steelers punter Brad Wing. Monday led the ACC in gross punting average as a freshman and was Duke's punter for four years. He was considered one of the top rookie punters available for this year's draft but was not one of the three who were selected.
Were you always a punter growing up?
I didn't start playing football until ninth grade; when I did, it was just kicking field goals and punting, so I just kind of stuck with it. I figured out it worked for me, and I enjoyed it and kept getting better at it. It's brought me a long way; I'm a small-town player — so I couldn't be happier with it.
What's it been like punting for an NFL team — even if it's just practice?
It's pretty exciting. It's something I've worked really hard for, so I'm happy to be here. It's really awesome.
You've obviously been blessed with athletic aptitude to do what you do at a high level, but how much can and do you practice punting?
Golf swings and kicking or punting, it's very similar. It's kind of all the same way. There are little things that you can change that can make huge improvements.
