Woman dies inside burning apartment
A Hill District woman was found inside her burning apartment Saturday morning, and authorities said an attempt had been made to set her on fire.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of Marsha Proctor, 49 of Elmore Square, as a homicide, but said the cause still is being investigated.
Police and emergency responders were called to the address shortly after 6 a.m. after residents reported thick smoke in the building.
The fire was contained to Proctor's apartment in the Addison Terrace public housing complex.
Proctor died at 6:26 a.m. Police have made no arrests.
Neighbors said Proctor, a slight woman who kept to herself, was known to all as Miss P.
Two fire trucks arrived at the scene but did not hose anything down once there, said Charles Meggett, a neighbor.
"I knew her a little," Meggett said. "She was quiet and never really came outside."
Knoxville man shot dead
Pittsburgh police searched for clues yesterday in a second, unrelated homicide that occurred early in the morning.
John Schreiner Jr., 29, of Knox Ave. in Knoxville, was found shot dead inside a house in the 300 block of Freeland Street in Beltzhoover, according to the medical examiner's office and police.
Police received a call reporting a man had been shot at 4:23 a.m. Saturday. Schreiner died at the scene at 4:45 p.m. Police have made no arrests.
Schreiner died from a gunshot wound to the back, the medical examiner's office said.
