Noteworthy: The Bev Smith Show's broadcast on AIDS awareness and funding was honored with a Robert L. Vann Award, which recognizes journalists in Western Pennsylvania for illustrating diversity and fullness of life for blacks in Western Pennsylvania. The award is named for Robert L. Vann, who co-founded The Pittsburgh Courier. Vann also served as assistant city solicitor in Pittsburgh from 1917-33, and then as special assistant attorney general under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
