FC Area seeks new member
At least four people have applied to fill a one-year Region 3 vacancy on the Fox Chapel Area School Board.
Board member Art Scully resigned this month after moving into another region of the district. He had served on the board since 1998.
"It was a tough thing," Scully said of his resignation. "I plan to stay in touch and help out any way I can, and I hear there are four very qualified people interested in the job. Hopefully it will be a net gain."
Region 3 covers Aspinwall, Blawnox, Wards 1 and 5 of O'Hara, and Districts 1 and 3 in Fox Chapel. The school board was expected to conduct interviews Monday night and plans to appoint a replacement during a special meeting Oct. 4.
Though Scully's term does not expire until 2007, the new board member will fill the vacancy until the next municipal election in 2005 when he or she would compete on the November ballot for a two-year term.
Candidates for school board must have lived in the district at least a year prior to appointment.
Scully said he was proud of his six years on the board, during which time he focused on three major efforts:
"We worked hard to develop a sense of respect for each other's role," Scully said. "The three legs have to be strong and work together."
Scully did not reveal whether he would compete for a school board seat to represent his new region. There will be a term open in 2005 and two in 2007. But Scully said he will remain involved in the community as the executive director of the St. Margaret Foundation, and, he plans to stay on as a mentor to the school board.
"I would be glad to offer my services in any way I can," he said. "I've already been on the phone with the (board) president and secretary this week."
