Mt. Pleasant Township playgrounds now tobacco free
Mt. Pleasant Township supervisors passed a resolution this week designating all playgrounds in the municipality tobacco free.
"It's just to make the kids aware that smoke and tobacco is not good for them," said Supervisor Jack Rutkowski.
The resolution came about from a request by the Penn State Cooperative Extension in Westmoreland County. The extension office is working in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health's statewide initiative Young Lungs At Play. The Penn State Extension will provide free Young Lungs at Play signs to the municipality to post in designated tobacco free areas.
A cold weather reminder by the Mt. Pleasant Township Emergency Services Association was issued by the supervisors. As cold weather approaches, the use of furnaces, fireplaces and heaters begin to increase. This is a reminder to get furnaces cleaned and checked, chimneys cleaned and check the cords and thermostats on electric heaters.
Supervisor Duane Hutter said residents should also check CO2 detectors and fire detectors. "They say you should change your batteries when you change your clocks, and that is coming up soon," said Supervisor Frank Puskar.
Approval was given to the Trauger Volunteer Fire Department's sponsorship of a spaghetti dinner to benefit Greg Garrison of Norvelt, who is in need of a lung transplant. The event is scheduled for this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Pleasant Unity Fire Hall. Tickets for the event are $7 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 4 to 12 and children age 3 and younger eat free. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Pleasant Unity Cafe & Video or by calling Vicki Beuten at 724-539-2767. The event is also sponsored by St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Trauger.
Trick or treat is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 30.
In other business supervisors announced a tentative budget will be adopted 9 a.m. on Nov. 23. The budget will be open for public inspection from that date until the final adoption takes place at the municipality's regular monthly meeting on Dec. 19.
