What happened on this day : In 1620, the Mayflower with its 109 Pilgrims, set sail from Southampton and tragically on this same day in 1635, their colony of Plymouth was hit with the first U.S. recorded hurricane. In 1858, regular mail delivery to the East Coast begins and in 1914, the Panama Canal opened. In 1918, the first full-length cartoon was shown and in 1945 U.S. wartime rations of gasoline and fuel oil ended. In 1961, the building of the Berlin Wall began and in 1969 three days of drugs, sex and rock and roll took off as Woodstock opened in New York. In 1991, more than 750,000 people attended Paul Simon's free concert in Central Park and finally, in 1939, the "Wizard of Oz" starring an then-unknown Judy Garland premiered at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
Quote for the day : "I've always taken the 'Wizard of Oz' very seriously. I believe in the idea of the rainbow and I have spent my entire life trying to get over it." -- Judy Garland
