Roundup: Junior varsity teams pick up wins

Winning pitcher Rae Ann Basinger fanned six and charted a no-hitter as the Connellsville junior varsity softball team breezed to a 17-1 victory over Uniontown in four innings Tuesday. Basinger also tallied three hits for the team, which posted a 14-run fourth inning. Nicole Brown tripled, and Amanda Stout was four-for-four with a double. Kayla Coughenour added two doubles, and Dena Leighty and Brittany Mancini collected one each.

SHS 25, MP 13, 6 innings

Winning pitcher Mandy Shallenberger stepped to the plate to hit three singles and score four runs as Southmoreland defeated Mount Pleasant on Monday. Brooke Gallentine collected a single, double and triple, and Ashley Sullenberger hit a triple and single. Ashley Matsey doubled, and Jenna Galloway tallied two hits and three runs scored.

SHS 29, Yough 11

Sullenberger smacked three triples and a single, scoring two runs to lead Southmoreland past Yough. Morgan Wildey had a single, double and triple, crossing the plate four times. Gallentine also scored four runs as she collected a triple and three singles. Allie Lane tripled, singled and scored three runs, and Kaity Moore hit home plate three times. Shallenberger went home four times, hitting a triple and two singles, and picked up another win on the mound.

JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL

West 2, Cal 0

Alyssa Bryner netted 11 service points, and Brittany Marra had seven as Connellsville Junior High West's varsity squad downed California 15-5, 15-4. West's junior varsity squad also won, 16-14 and 15-12. Heidi Dewitt racked up nine service points.

The Lady Falcons will host Laurel Highlands next Thursday.

LH 2, East 1

Brittany Guariglia slammed nine service points, and Ashleigh Tikey racked up eight while turning in an excellent offensive effort as East lost a close one to Laurel Highlands, 8-15, 15-4, 13-15. Brittney Shaffer served up six points, Emily Stout had five, and Nicole Sigwalt and Sarah Giles netted four each.

The Lady Falcons' junior varsity squad dropped a 2-0 decision with games of 18-5 and 10-15. Katie Sleasman posted five service points for East.

East will host Redstone on Thursday.
