Soccer teams earn key wins
Hannah Lazuka scored a goal in the first half and the Geibel girls soccer team made it stand up as the Gators picked up a clutch 1-0 victory over visiting Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 6-AA.
Connellsville 2, Laurel Highlands 0 -- Lacie Rosensteel scored two goals and Allyson Panzella added two assists as the Falcons (3-2, 2-0) picked up a Section 6-AAA win over host Laurel Highlands. Ashlyn Fratto was in goal and stopped 15 shots to get the shutout for Connellsville.
Mt. Pleasant 11, East Allegheny 0 -- Ashley Formato scored three goals and Brianna Dombrosky scored two goals as the Vikings (2-2, 1-1) topped visiting East Allegheny in Section 6-AA. Alyssa Tlumack, Jarah Long, Alyssa Dombrosky, Haley Renze, Morgan Zider and Brittany Lazur each scored a goal. Sarah Brown was in goal and got the shutout.
Connellsville 3, Penn-Trafford 2 -- Cassie Show recorded 16 kills and 19 service points as the Falcons (2-1) earned an 18-25, 29-27, 25-27, 25-15, 15-11 victory over visiting Penn-Trafford in non-section action. Cat Healy notched nine kills to go along with six blocks. Gabby Smith racked up 20 digs and 18 service points. Tori Martucci and Ali Crutchman each had 16 service points for Connellsville.
Connellsville 4, Greensburg Salem 1 -- Carly Cordaro and Malinda Miller won at second and third singles respectively as the Falcons (2-7, 1-5) picked up a Section 1-AAA victory over host Greensburg Salem. At first doubles, Casey Nicholson and Laura Summy earned a win. At second singles, Justine Poorbaugh and Lauren Hoffer were victorious for the Falcons.
Mt. Pleasant 4, McGuffey 1 -- April Bradley and Christy Campbell won at first doubles and Jessica Temple and Kelsey Porter won at second doubles as the Vikings (5-2, 5-2) defeated host McGuffey in Section 1-AA. Shayla Landman and Ashley Trout won at first and third singles respectively for Mt. Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant 205, Norwin 208 -- Megan Smith fired a 49 and Megan Seibel shot a 50 as the Vikings posted a win against host Norwin in Section 1 action. Danielle Brnilovich and Madelyn Auer each shot a 53 for Mt. Pleasant. Amy-Gabrielle Bartolac led Norwin with a 49.
Indiana 223, Southmoreland 238 -- Lauren Marchewka shot a 57, but the Scotties were defeated at home by Indiana in Section 1 play. Maddy Nelson (58), Jess Cramer (58) and Sam Stouffer (59) completed the scoring for Southmoreland. Veronica Bujdos shot a 50 to pace Indiana.
Jefferson-Morgan 206, Frazier 231 -- DJ Hudik notched a 42, but Frazier lost a non-section match to host Jefferson-Morgan. Zach Smalich (45), Nick Hawranko (47), Tyler Rock (48) and Robert Gondura (49) paced Frazier (3-4). Zach Berkstresser shot a 40 to lead Jefferson-Morgan.
Baldwin 20, East 9 -- Jordan McCrae scored on a five-yard run and the Connellsville Junior High East defense forced a safety in the third quarter, but East lost to host Baldwin. Ben Kisiel kicked an extra point for East (0-1).
