Wellness walk draws more than 150
The non-profit HEALTHY Armstrong collaborative group, sponsored a free Rally and Wellness Walk with more than 150 participants in attendance on May 17.
The opening ceremonies began in the Kittanning Senior High School Gymnasium with Dr. Hal Altman, chief medical director at ACMH Hospital, and William Kerr, Armstrong School District superintendent, welcoming the participants.
Armstrong County Board of Commissioners chairwoman Patricia Kirkpatrick announced the Apple Poster Contest winners. This apple poster contest was open to all ASD students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The theme for the posters was "What would an apple say to make you want to eat it." Poster winners were each given an E-pass to the Belmont Complex. Each grand prize winner was given a $100 savings bond.
Winners from each school were:
Dayton Elementary: Landon Schamberg and Elizabeth Cornish.
Elderton Elementary: Olivia Farmer and Marissa Smail.
Kittanning Township Elementary: Logan James and Kylie Hagofsky.
Lenape Elementary: Maddie Baillie and Hannah Bielski.
Shannock Valley Elementary: Carter Eddy and Austin Bussard.
West Hills Primary: Madisyn Lorigan.
West Hills Intermediate: Megan Cloak.
Honorable Mention: Mikey Fouse, Shannock Valley Elementary.
Kindergarten-third grade grand prize winner: Carter Eddy.
Fourth grade-sixth grade grand prize winner: Elizabeth Cornish.
Before beginning the 2K/5K walk, all students were invited to the center of the gymnasium and were led in warm-up exercises by Edward Cutts from West Hills Elementary.
At the conclusion of the walk, all registered participants were eligible to win prizes including bicycles and ipods. The participants also had healthy snacks courtesy of Luann Fee, director of nutrition services at ASD, and her IUP interns.
"It was great to see the students having a good time and enjoying the Armstrong Trail," said Dee Simmons, CRNP from the ACMH Hospital, Leechburg Primary Care Center. "I can't wait to see them all again in September at the ACMH Hospital Walk."
HEALTHY Armstrong is a collaborative group made up of ACMH Hospital, ACMH Foundation, Armstrong School District, Children's Community Pediatrics Armstrong and UPMC Health Plan and numerous other community partners working to increase wellness opportunities for Armstrong County families and youth.
