Freeport golfers down Apollo-Ridge

A strong, five-player performance allowed Freeport (7-4, 6-2) to prevail against Apollo-Ridge, 203-216, on Tuesday afternoon at Buffalo Golf Course and maintain a second-place tie with West Shamokin in the section standings.

Apollo-Ridge had the top two scorers in the match: Anthony Neville shot a 1-over-par 37, and Adam Lockwood finished with a 38. But every Freeport golfer finished with a 43 or better, and Apollo-Ridge's latter three scorers — Luke Burrell, Andy Veschininsky and Ben Velesig — had a 44 or worse.

Robbie Miller shot a team-low 39 for the Yellow Jackets, and Richard Vandruff and Devin Earney tied with 40s. Pat D'Amico (41) and Tyler Thomas (43) rounded out Freeport's scoring.

» West Shamokin 214, Elderton 289 — The Wolves (8-2, 6-2) kept themselves in the Division II, Section 1 playoff race with a dominant performance at White Oak Golf Course. Dylan Cube shot a team-low 40 for West Shamokin, and Chad Funderlin had Elderton's low score with a 53.

» Ford City 218, Burrell 224 — Christopher Ignatz's 2-over 37 and Gabe Valasek's 38 offset above-average scores from Alex Gladysiewski (47), Matt Buzzinotti (48) and Chuck Cippel (48) during the Sabers' Division II, Section 1 win at Lenape Heights Golf Course. With the win, Ford City (8-1, 8-0) remained in first place in the section standings.

» Kittanning 204, Hampton 210 — The Wildcats (10-2, 6-1) edged the Talbots in a Division I, Section 8 match at Pittsburgh North Golf Club with the help of Tim Barto's 2-over, match-low 38 and Jordan Klodowski's 39.

Girls volleyball

» Ford City 3, Burrell 0 — Heather Davis did a bit of everything for the Sabers, who earned their first Section 2-AA win of the season. She had seven aces, four kills and four digs.

Lindsay Stewart led Ford City offensively with 10 kills, and Ashley Panchik shined as a setter with 20 assists.

Ford City won each game by at least eight points.

» Elderton 3, Trinity Christian 0 — Paige Baker and Laina Walker paced the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 in Section 1-A. Baker had a team-high 10 kills, and Walker trailed with nine.
