Summer 2009: Superstars brighten concert season

| Sunday, May 17, 2009

The summer concert season gets off to a rousing start with a show by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on Tuesday at the Mellon Arena.

Toby Keith will play one of the last outdoor concerts of the season Sept. 11 at Post-Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown.

In between, there are superstars, buzz acts and free shows aplenty.

If you want big names, choose from Coldplay at the P-G Pavilion on May 3, country superstar Kenny Chesney at Heinz Field June 6, or a double bill of Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction June 10 at the P-G Pavilion. Also at the P-G in Burgettstown, Phish, back on the road after a few years away, June 18, plus Aerosmith with Z.Z. Top, June 24.

There are also the annual visits to the P-G Pavilion by Dave Matthews on June 19-20 and Jimmy Buffett on June 23.

In the clubs, look for the Meat Puppets, June 6 at Mr. Small's Theatre in Millvale, The Church at the Rex Theatre, South Side, June 27, rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson at Howler's Coyote Cafe, Bloomfield, July 19 and the Fiery Furnaces at Brillobox in Bloomfield, Aug. 6.

Outdoor shows at new and improved venues include The Clarks CD release concert June 13 at the Amphitheatre at Station Square, and Neko Case July 31 at the Riverplex Amphitheatre in Homestead.

If your budget is tight, the Three Rivers Arts Festival returns to Point State Park and has another very good lineup of free concerts, bookended by the Black Keys, June 5, and The Wailers, June 14.

The Allegheny County Summer Concert series is also free; this year's shows include the Old 97s, June 28 and Son Volt, Aug. 9, both at Hartwood Acres. Among the acts at South Park are Steve Earle, July 17 and Foghat, Aug. 7.

Later this summer finds the Jonas Brothers, July 25, and Rod Stewart Aug. 22, both at the P-G Pavilion.
