Review: Suzy Bogguss puts fans center stage
Initially, it looked like the turnout was so poor for Suzy Bogguss' Christmas show that the Yuletide spirit would suffer. Yet Bogguss, in her perky style, turned the bummer into a special treat for the few dozen audience members.
Last Wednesday's show had a peculiar location -- at the South Side's Rex Theater, which usually hosts a 21-and-older crowd. Bogguss' Christmas concert is a family show that attracts people of all ages -- including kids and senior citizens, many of whom probably aren't big South Side fans. We still got a delightful show that seemed like each person's own personal performance. Bogguss asked us to scoot our chairs right up to the edge of the stage, which was adorned with giant gift bags and a big, cuddly teddy bear. She sang many carols from both of her Christmas albums, including the country-fried favorite "Two Step 'Round the Christmas Tree."
At the end of the evening, Bogguss walked from chair to chair, handing us her microphone so we could join the Christmas caroling.
