Parkway East open this weekend, but barely
PennDOT will not close the Parkway East this weekend, as promised, but driving the interstate still will be slow this weekend.
The state highway agency plans to shut down lanes in both directions starting Friday night as construction work continues between Oakland and Edgewood.
Only one inbound lane will be open from 8 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday. One outbound lane will be open from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday.
That means one lane in each direction will close in the two-lane section of the highway and two lanes in each direction will close in the three-lane section of the highway.
Among the work planned is paving inside the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, installing signs and trimming trees along the highway.
PennDOT also plans to shut down several ramps:
- Bates Street: the inbound exit ramps to Oakland and Second Avenue from 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Sunday. Workers plan to pave the ramps. A posted detour will guide drivers to Grant Street, Exit 1C, to reach Second Avenue and Boulevard of the Allies. Also, the Bates Street ramp connecting to the outbound parkway also will close from 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Sunday.
- Edgewood-Swissvale: all exit ramps, heading outbound, will close from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday.
- South Braddock Avenue: the ramp linking with the outbound parkway will close from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday.
- Monongahela Avenue: one lane will close near the Edgewood-Swissvale ramps Saturday.
