Humane Society safe, $500 missing
Less than $500 in cash was stolen, but it was a large haul nonetheless.
A 215-pound floor safe containing a small sum of cash along with checks and credit card receipts were stolen Sunday from the Washington County Humane Society in North Strabane.
The society hadn't gotten around to bolting the recently purchased safe to the floor, the shelter's director of business affairs, Beth Neely, said. The society is planning to renovate the shelter and officials figured the failure to secure the safe wouldn't matter much, she said.
"Nobody ever thought anyone would walk off with it," Neely said.
But someone entered the shelter Sunday through a 2-foot by 2-foot kennel door. North Strabane police Lt. Dan Levi said the safe contained $435 in cash, $673 in checks and $646 in credit card receipts. Police are continuing to investigate the burglary.
Neely said she's just glad that no animals were harmed.
"If they can get in that easily, maybe they can harm the animals," she said.
