Cheerleading to begin at middle school
A new middle school cheerleading program is starting in the Keystone Oaks School District.
Cheerleading Coach Karen Wiegand said at a school board meeting Monday that the program would be for seventh- and eighth-graders. The board also discussed hiring additional cheerleading coaches.
Decisions on those positions, along with other coaching jobs, are expected to be made at the board's legislative meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Myrtle Elementary School in Castle Shannon.

Marjorie Heins, the high school's gifted coordinator and engineering design and fabrication teacher, led the eight-member team to victory. The same team, comprising seniors Daniel Weller, Roger Cheng, Peter Soung, Erich Scheller, Matt Findle, Daniel Doan, Mark Gabbard and Jacob Lambach, also won last year's competition as juniors.
The competition is held throughout the country for students who have taken physics and upper-level math courses, Heins said.
The team hopes to qualify for the state and national competitions, Heins said.

Each guest must register before March 28. The cost is $30 per person for dinner followed by a program and entertainment.

Children and parents in the Carlynton School District are working on an anti-bullying plan for the schools.
School board President John Meighan said administrators' and board members' hands often are tied, because of restrictions on disciplining children who have behavioral problems.
But he and the board asked the committee to continue its efforts to create a comprehensive anti-bullying plan that could be implemented districtwide.
