Duo charged with taking $3,500 from Lawrenceville laundry
Two men who police say burglarized a Laundromat in Lawrenceville were arrested after taking $3,500 in coins to a supermarket coin exchange machine in the same neighborhood.
Pittsburgh police charged Kevin Walters, 20, of Lawrenceville and Brandon Cafeo, 20, of Shaler with robbing the Butler Street Laundromat at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said surveillance video from the business captured the men using pry bars to break open coin boxes of several washing machines, a Coke vending machine, soap and laundry bag vending machines, and a change-making machine. In addition to money, they stole boxes of laundry soap, police said.
Walter and Cafeo were arrested after workers at the Shop 'n Save on 56th Street called police about two suspicious men using a CoinStar machine, which collects and totals loose change and prints a voucher that can be taken to a cashier for bills.
The men were nervous and evasive when asked about the large amount of change, police said. Detectives from the burglary squad recognized the two from the surveillance video and charged them with burglary, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and criminal conspiracy.
