West Virginia theft suspects forgot to get gas
Three Fayette County thieves ran out of luck -- and gas -- this week.
Thomas E. Campbell III, 24, of 237 S. Mount Vernon Ave., Uniontown; Joshua S. Grimm, 21, of 215 Mt. Braddock Road, Mt. Braddock; and an unidentified juvenile are awaiting extradition to Preston County, W.Va., for allegedly stealing 36 cans of beer from a convenience store there Tuesday.
A witness at the store followed the trio about 12 miles in her car from the North Preston Kwik Stop in Valley Point, W.Va., on Route 26, with county deputies in hot pursuit. Police said the green minivan the three suspects were riding in ran out of gas shortly after crossing the border into Pennsylvania on Wharton Furnace Road in Fayette County.
"It's something you'd see in the 'Three Stooges,'" said Sue Golden, an employee of the Preston County Sheriff's Department.
The theft occurred at 10:30 p.m., police said.
West Virginia authorities detained the two men and the juvenile and summoned Pennsylvania state Trooper Christopher T. Cole of the Uniontown barracks.
Golden said sheriff's deputies plan to charge the men with larceny in West Virginia. Campbell will face a charge in Pennsylvania for possession of drug paraphernalia discovered during a search, Cole said.
The local charge will be filed with Uniontown District Judge Wendy Dennis.
