Accident claims second victim
State police will consult with Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck on any charges to be filed in the wake of a two-vehicle accident in Hempfield Township that has claimed a second victim, state police said Saturday.
Carole Katonka, 63, of Greensburg RD 10, died shortly after the March 10 accident at the intersection of Route 136 and Willow Crossing Road.
Her husband, Paul F. Katonka Sr., 67, died Friday at UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. The Allegheny County Coroner's Office reported yesterday that it had no information on the victim or the cause of his death.
Paul Katonka was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Corsica that collided with a dump truck driven by James Schiavone, 40, of Penn, at 4:30 p.m. Police said Katonka was turning left from Route 136 onto Willow Crossing Road when he pulled into the path of the dump truck.
Trooper Jeanne Martin, a state police spokeswoman for the Greensburg barracks, said yesterday that charges will not be filed for at least several weeks. Trooper Teko Angelicchio is awaiting the report of an accident reconstruction expert and the results of a blood alcohol test on Shiavone, who "had been drinking prior to the accident," according to the initial report.
"The trooper will take all this information, consult the DA, and then charges will be filed," Martin said.
