Kecksburg festival will recall its famous UFO
A celebration billed as out of this world will commemorate the December night on which a strange object purportedly fell from the sky near Kecksburg.
The Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department will hold its fifth annual Old Fashion Days & UFO Festival on Sept. 18 and 19.
The event centers around accounts of a mysterious acorn-shaped object that fell Dec. 9, 1965 near the Mt. Pleasant Township village and was recovered by the military. Kecksburg firemen were on the scene, and to this day some claim it was an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
A parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 18, and a trophy will be given for the best UFO float in the procession. A bucket brigade contest for firemen, a bed race and a hay bale toss will be featured after the parade.
On Sept. 19, there will be a car cruise from noon to 5 p.m. and music by Katrina Lynn on stage at 1 p.m.
New this year is the first UFO hot dog-eating contest to be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 19. The "out of this world" hot dogs will be specially spiced for those who attempt to eat the largest number of them within a specified time.
UFO and paranormal researchers from the Pittsburgh area will be on hand both days with displays set up in the banquet room.
Scheduled to attend are Stan Gordon, UFO researcher and author; John Ventre, state director of the Pennsylvania Mutual UFO Network; Eric Altman, director of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society; Dan Hageman, director of the Butler Organization of the Unexplained; Brian and Terri Seech of the Center for Unexplained Events; and Keith Bastianini, UFO researcher and graphic artist.
At 2 p.m. Sept. 19, Gordon will present a free illustrated lecture on the Kecksburg UFO, Bigfoot, and past and recent UFO sightings in the area. The lecture will be held in the fire truck shed.
Other researchers will speak about their active investigations and upcoming events.
There will be food -- featuring special UFO food items -- and music during the two-day event.
