Meet John Browne

| Sunday, March 9, 2008

John Browne -- a respected financial analyst and writer, frequent financial commentator on television and a former member of the British Parliament -- has joined the Tribune-Review's lineup of opinion page columnists.

His Sunday columns will focus on economics and financial issues and their political or social impact. But his writing occasionally ranges from the world's current political and military strategies to individual investment and wealth-management strategies.

A regular commentator on political, economic and financial issues on CNBC's "Kudlow & Company," he most recently was an editor and columnist for NewsMax Media.

"As a political and investment strategist, I look forward to working with the Trib," Browne said. "It is a fine opportunity to help cut through the often disingenuous and confusing information with which we are all bombarded on a regular basis.

"I hope to present a realistic background against which every reader can better plan his business and financial future."

Browne, 69, is a graduate of Harvard Business School, Britain's Canfield Institute of Technology and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst -- England's equivalent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He served as a conservative member of Parliament in the 1980s during Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's administration and was among those who briefed her on military and political affairs, including the former Soviet Union's overtures to the West under Mikhail Gorbachev.

Browne's extensive private-sector financial experience includes positions as vice president of investments for Smith Barney Inc., as founder and CEO of Falcon Finance Management, as a director of Middle East operations for the European Banking Company and as an associate broker and investment banker in the British and U.S. bond and investment markets.

He also has worked as an adviser to an international counterterrorism company, based on his experience in international finance and his service in Britain's military.

A dual U.S.-British citizen, Browne lives in West Palm Beach, Fla.

TribLIVE commenting policy

You are solely responsible for your comments and by using TribLive.com you agree to our Terms of Service.

We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive commentary for a general readership. By screening submissions, we provide a space where readers can share intelligent and informed commentary that enhances the quality of our news and information.

While most comments will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive, moderating decisions are subjective. We will make them as carefully and consistently as we can. Because of the volume of reader comments, we cannot review individual moderation decisions with readers.

We value thoughtful comments representing a range of views that make their point quickly and politely. We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments either by the same reader or different readers

We follow the same standards for taste as the daily newspaper. A few things we won't tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING. Don't include URLs to Web sites.

We do not edit comments. They are either approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment that is quoted or excerpted in an article. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation.

We welcome strong opinions and criticism of our work, but we don't want comments to become bogged down with discussions of our policies and we will moderate accordingly.

We appreciate it when readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts point out errors of fact or emphasis and will investigate all assertions. But these suggestions should be sent via e-mail. To avoid distracting other readers, we won't publish comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or in an article.
