Roundup: Penn Hills blanks Shaler
Ken Lewis rushed for 181 yards on 27 carries to lead Penn Hills over Shaler 27-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.
Bryan Moore completed two passes of 15 and 9 yards for touchdowns to David Harvey and Tony Mitchell for the Indians (9-1), who will face North Hills next week in the quarterfinals.
Shaler finished its season 3-7.
Upper St. Clair 49, Plum 0 -- Upper St. Clair's Danny Cafaro scored five touchdowns to lead No. 3 Upper St. Clair (10-0) to a rout of Plum in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Cafaro returned two interceptions for touchdowns, two punt returns for scores and a 1-yard run for a touchdown. Cafaro rushed for 93 yards. Plum ends its season at 5-5.
Ambridge 25, Pine-Richland 17 - - Ambridge upset defending champion Pine-Richland in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs Friday. Ambridge came back from a 17-point first-quarter deficit. Bridgers quarterback Justin Ford completed 12 of 32 passes for 116 yards. T.J. Pringle scored on a 2-yard run for No. 9 Ambridge (6-4), and Craig Bunney added three field goals of 37, 22 and 25 yards. Dana Jones added a 35-yard run for a score for Ambridge. Tim Newman rushed for 109 yards for No. 6 Pine-Richland (7-3), and Jake Long completed 5 of 17 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown in the loss.
West Allegheny 41, Knoch 6 -- Greg Marshall completed 9 of 14 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 1 West Allegheny (10-0) over Knoch in a WPIAL first-round playoff game. Marshall completed touchdowns passes of 42, 15 and 16 yards to Robe Giles, Scott Ruperto and Josh Shelton, respectively. Dorin Dickerson added two touchdowns of 7 and 29 yards for West Allegheny. Knoch quarterback Jordan Shoop completed 10 of 25 passes for 141 yards and a 10-yard touchdown pass. Knoch's season ends at 3-7.
Moon 28, Chartiers Valley 7 -- Casey Williams rushed for 138 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead No. 3 Moon (9-1) over Chartiers Valley (5-5) in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Williams scored from 12 and 45 yards out. Nick Hursky scored Chartiers Valley's only score on an 8-yard run. Moon outgained Chartiers Valley, 341-227.
Canon-McMillan 22, Belle Vernon 0 - - Doug Rheam rushed for 129 yards on seven carries and scored on an 80-yard run to lead No. 4 Canon-McMillan over Belle Vernon (5-5) in a first round playoff game. Kendall Davis and Corey Teck each scored a touchdown for Canon-McMillan (8-2).
Beaver Falls 21, East Allegheny 8 -- Reshaun Tarver scored on touchdown runs of 41 and 53 yards, as Beaver Falls upset No. 6 East Allegheny (8-2) in a WPIAL first round matchup. The first run came on a botched snap with the Tigers (7-3) in punt formation. For the game, Tarver ran for 160 yards on 19 carries.
Laurel 28, South Fayette 14 -- No. 9 Laurel scored 28 unanswered points to top No. 10 South Fayette (7-3) in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs Friday night. Ray Pollum completed 10 of 18 passes for 144 yards and a score and added another on the ground to pace the Laurel (9-1) offense. Josh Linton also rushed for 141 yards on 25 carries.
Aliquippa 48, Brentwood 29 -- Brandon Revis intercepted four passes to lead top-seeded Aliquippa (10-0) over Brentwood (5-5) in a first round WPIAL contest. Desmond Patrick paced the Quips' offense, rushing for 152 yards on 23 carries. Brentwood quarterback Andy Lauterbach passed for 324 yards, but threw five interceptions.
Seton-La Salle 41, Neshannock 3 -- Brandon Bogdanski rushed for 209 yards, including touchdown runs of 73 and 80 yards respectively, on 11 carries to pace No. 2 Seton-La Salle (10-0) over Neshannock in a WPIAL first round game. WPIAL passing leader Bill Stull completed 13 of 19 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns for the Rebels. Joe Moses rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries for Neshannock (6-4).
South Park 14, Mohawk 0 -- Akere Atte rushed for two scores to lead No. 5 South Park (9-1) over Mohawk (5-5).
Clairton 50, California 7 -- Dana Brown ran for 209 yards and four touchdowns on six carries, as No. 1 Clairton breezed past California (6-3) in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Andre Carr also ran for 91 yards and a score for Clairton (9-1). Matt Hyita scored on a 1-yard run to account for the only California score.
Western Beaver 39, Carmichaels Area 20 -- Warren Taylor scored five times, including touchdown runs of 41, 3, 46 and 8 yards to Western Beaver (8-2) over Carmichaels.
Taylor, who rushed for 261 yards, also returned a kick 95 yards for a score in the first quarter.
Farrell 24, Beth-Center 13 -- Kelvin Newby and Quentin Odem scored a pair of touchdowns each to propel for second-seeded Farrell (8-2) in its victory over Beth-Center (7-3).
Rochester 27, Chartiers-Houston 7 -- Brent Whiteleather rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns, as No. 4 Rochester (7-3) defeated Chartiers-Houston (7-3) in a first round WPIAL playoff game Friday night. Sophomore Derek Moye also caught a touchdown pass for the Rams. Chartiers-Houston quarterback Zach Burt threw for 165 yards and a touchdown in defeat.
Bishop Canevin 14, Riverview 0 -- Matt Walter carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards and a score to lead No. 8 Bishop Canevin over Riverview (6-4) in a WPIAL Class A first round playoff game. Tyler Undereiner added 50 yards on 14 carries in the victory. The host Crusaders (8-2) scored on two 45-yard drives, and advance to face Rochester in the quarterfinals.
United 40, Saltsburg 22 -- Kurt McGinnis scored three touchdowns, including two touchdown runs of 8 and 10 yards, as United (8-1) rolled over Saltsburg (0-9) in Heritage Conference. Adam Mack added two touchdowns for United on runs of 41 and 8 yards.
Oliver 11, Schenley 0 -- Lamar Copeland rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown, as Oliver (4-5, 4-4) downed Schenley (2-7, 2-7) in a weather-shortened City League matchup.
