Matchup of the Week
LAMONT SMITH VS. DERRON SMITH
About Lamont Smith (Central Catholic)
Smith is the leading rusher in the WPIAL with 1,960 yards, along with 21 touchdowns, and gained a career-high 312 and scored three TDs in last week's quarterfinal victory over Gateway. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior has game-breaking speed (he scored on a 92-yarder last week) and he's durable (254 carries this year).
About Derron Smith (Woodland Hills)
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound senior gets overshadowed playing alongside Pitt recruit Greg Webster, but he's a play-making defender in his own right. Smith has 4.65 speed in the 40-yard dash and is a ferocious hitter. His speed and pursuit ability will be a key against Central Catholic's Smith.
Lamont Smith will have the advantage when No. 1 Central Catholic meets No. 5 Woodland Hills at 7:30 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny High School in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals. Smith has proven he can run against any defense, including 162 yards against Woodland Hills in their Week 7 meeting.
Woodland Hills senior linebacker Greg Webster won last week's matchup with Upper St. Clair junior quarterback Pat McShane. Webster recorded 11 tackles (nine solo), as the Wolverines beat Upper St. Clair, 28-15, in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals. McShane completed 11 of 17 passes for 60 yards in the Panthers' lowest scoring output of the season.
