Shaler closes on keeping football coach
The Shaler Area School District has taken a major step toward retaining football coach Neil Gordon.
Athletic director Paul Holzshu said Tuesday night that he will recommend to the district's school board at tonight's meeting that they offer Gordon a multiyear contract to return.
Gordon, who led Shaler to an 8-3 record and into the WPIAL quarterfinals this season on a one-year deal, said he probably would accept.
"I think so, unless there is something unforeseen," he said. "But you can't take a bite out of something until you have it."
Gordon spent 21 seasons at Penn Hills, compiling a 156-72-2 record before that district decided not to retain him this year. He said he quickly found a comfort level at Shaler.
"I think the community was pleased," he said. "I had fun. I enjoyed the kids, enjoyed the district. I don't have anything bad to say."
Gordon said he never was contacted by another school district about coaching.
