Veterans key for Penn Hills
Penn Hills coach Ron Graham said the plan for the 2011 season is pretty simple.
It comes down to focus and daily improvement from his veterans as well as others who will see increased roles on offense or defense.
The Indians finished third in the Quad East conference last year, as Central Catholic and Woodland Hills grabbed the top two spots.
"There can be a lot of distractions, but the guys have to work to maintain a cohesive team," Graham said. "If we do that, we can be pretty competitive."
Graham will count on junior Darius Holloway to run the offense at quarterback — the shifty and speedy signal-caller takes over for the graduated Phil Morford.
"Darius has good escapability and is agile," Graham said. "He was impressive in our 7-on-7 games. He's shown he has a good grasp of the offense."
Seniors Corey Jones and Chaz Whittaker provide veteran leadership at receiver. The duo combined for 42 receptions, 767 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago.
"They both bring maturity to the field and will help Darius grow," Graham said.
Jones is Penn Hills' lone returning all-conference first-team selection from 2010.
A group of returning running backs — senior Malik Blakeman and juniors Aaron Bailey and Toreek Hester — look to pace the ground attack. Terrell Roberson, the team's leading rusher last season, graduated.
Up front, senior Treyvon Hester is expected to anchor the line on both sides of the ball.
"Treyvon has to be on the field," Graham said. "He should provide good leadership with young offensive linemen coming back."
Defensively, Graham likes the strength of the secondary, as Blakeman, Whittaker, Jones and senior Jaquan Williams are returning starters.
Senior Darian Macklin returns as a starter at linebacker, and Toreek Hester saw more starting time at linebacker as last season progressed.
