Palko named Trib Terrific 25 Big School Player of the Year
West Allegheny quarterback Tyler Palko finally got an offensive line in front of him with some size when he was named to the Associated Press Big Schools (Class AAAA and AAA) all-state team, announced Saturday.
The all-state team was selected following two rounds of nominations and statewide voting by sports writers and sportscasters.
Palko, the Big Schools Player of the Year, is joined by a line that averages 278 pounds and includes Woodland Hills' Brian Borgoyn, North Hills' Mark Farris and Mt. Lebanon's Bob Whitaker.
Woodland Hills quarterback Steve Breaston - selected as the offensive specialist - North Allegheny linebacker Tom Parks and West Allegheny linebacker Manny Rojas were other WPIAL players on the first team.
They are joined by the likes of running backs Darrell Blackman of Williamsport, Jamar Brittingham of Neshaminy and Jawan Walker of Erie Cathedral Prep and receivers Josh Hannum of Strath Haven and Danny Melendez of J.P. McCaskey in Lancaster on the first team offense.
WPIAL players on the second team include Central Catholic tight end Steve Buches, Mt. Lebanon running back Brian Young and West Allegheny placekicker Derek Javarone on offense, Upper St. Clair defensive tackle Scott Geiger and linebacker Kevin McLee and safety Carl Farrell of Uniontown on defense.
The third team featured Central receiver Drew Garcia and Woodland Hills running back Kareem Dutrieuille on offense, and North Hills linebacker Bill Lamb, Perry linebacker Brandon Pezzelle, Westinghouse defensive back Mike Charles and McKeesport defensive back Ryan Kwiecinski on defense.
Aside from Palko, two other Pitt recruits were named to the all-state team. Dallas tackle John Simonitis made the second-team offense. Reading running back Sam Bryant made the third-team offense.
