Roundup: Connellsville rallies past Hempfield

Although Hempfield Area took an early lead, Connellsville Area rallied in the third inning and defeated the Spartans 6-4 in a non-section contest.

Hempfield went up 2-0 in the second inning, but Connellsville answered in the third. Wes Hughes tripled, Ryan Firestone cracked a two-run homer.

The Spartans managed to pull within one run in the sixth, but the Falcons added an insurance run in the seventh to secure the win.

Connellsville Area's Ron Addis went 4 for 4, including two doubles.

  • Dave Lauteri hit a fifth-inning homer as Monessen edged Jeannette 8-5 in a Section 4-A game.

  • Indiana Area's Tom Valazak went 3 for 4, including a sixth-inning home run, as the Indians cruised to a 10-1 Section 1-AAA win over Penn-Trafford. Indians' pitcher Jason Shirey hit a triple in the sixth inning.

  • Nick Mangini and Ryan McConnell hit doubles as Burrell edged North Hills 4-3 in a non-section game.

  • California Area defeated Geibel 7-5 in a Section 7-A game, which featured a seventh-inning three-run homer by Parke Bongiorno.

  • Sean McCahill went 4 for 5, hitting a three-run homer in the first inning, as Albert Gallatin defeated Laurel Highlands 14-9 in a Section 2-AAA contest.

    Softball

    Hempfield Area's Erin Truxal had three hits and four RBI as the Spartans trounced Albert Gallatin 14-1 in a Section 3-AAA game.

  • Ashley Warr pitched a three-inning no-hitter as West Shamokin blanked St. Joseph 15-0 in a Section 7-A game. The Wolves' Natalie Marken cracked a home run.

  • Lori Lantzy, Laura Shugarts and Krysten Walker hit doubles en route to Greensburg Central Catholic's 14-5 victory over Mt. Pleasant Area in a Section 3-AA game.

  • Greater Latrobe improved to 6-0 with its Section 1-AAA, 6-1 win over Franklin Regional.

  • Connellsville Area held Laurel Highlands scoreless, winning 9-0 in a Section 3-AAA game. Rachel Means doubled twice for the Falcons.

  • Autumn Minor allowed five hits and one walk as Waynesburg shut out Belle Vernon Area 5-0 in a Section 7-AA game.

  • Rachel Roddy hit a two-run double in the third inning as Greensburg Salem downed Uniontown Area 7-2 in a Section 3-AAA contest.

  • Derry Area pitcher Brittany Monteparte not only earned the win, but smacked a double and went 3 for 4 as the Trojans defeated East Allegheny 10-4 in a Section 3-AA game.
