Norwin volleyball remains unbeaten
Mike Ferragonio had 15 kills to give the Norwin boys volleyball team (10-0, 6-0) a 3-1 win over host Hempfield (4-4, 3-3) in a Section 5 match Tuesday night.
Norwin won the first game, 25-22, but Hempfield rebounded in the second, 25-23. Norwin claimed the next two games, 25-14 and 25-13.
Brad Bouldin added 13 kills and Mike Pochan recorded 15 service points, while Pat Walling contributed five digs.
Norwin, ranked no. 4 in the state, will face Derry on Thursday at Norwin.
Carmichaels 10, Geibel 0
Carmichaels' (11-1, 7-1) Jared Lapkowicz, with his 32nd win, is believed to have set the record for most wins by a pitcher in the WPIAL. Why believed• The WPIAL doesn't keep official stats for pitching victories. Ellwood City's Kevin Ricciuti was believed to have set the record for wins, going 31-3 from 2000 to 2003. With the victory, Lapkowicz's record now stands at 32-4 with an ERA of .043.
Derry Area 10, Greensburg Salem 0 (5 inn.)
Bob Reeping, Mike Machen and Ryan Conrad hit a double apiece for Derry Area (7-4, 5-2) as the Trojans held Greensburg Salem (9-3, 4-3) scoreless in a 5-inning, Section 2-AAA game.
Ford City 8, Freeport 1
With six strikeouts, Jesse Stivason (3-0) notched a win for Ford City (7-4, 4-3) as it downed Freeport (5-5, 4-3) in a Section 3-AA game. Brandon Goldinger went 2 for 3 with two RBI for Ford City.
Latrobe 10, Hempfield 7
Dan Bryan and Tony DeStefano had two RBI apiece for Latrobe (3-8, 2-5) as it defeated Hempfield (3-9-1, 2-5) in a Section 2-AAAA game. Ed Gorinski also tripled for Hempfield.
Beth-Center 10, Waynesburg 0
The combination of pitcher Matt Stay, Joe Tarley and Todd Chisler helped lead Beth-Center (4-6, 3-4) over Waynesburg (4-6, 3-4) in a Section 2-AA game. Tarley finished 2 for 4 with three RBI.
Ringgold 13, Thomas Jefferson 8
Kyle Fisher-Law went 4 for 4, with two doubles and two singles, as Ringgold (11-1-1, 8-0) edged Thomas Jefferson (5-8, 3-5) in a Section 4-AAA game. Ricky Bartman, who also earned the win, hit a home run.
Mt. Pleasant 3, Southmoreland 0
Tony Capozzi smacked a triple in the fifth inning as Mt. Pleasant (9-3, 5-1) defeated Southmoreland (4-7, 2-4) in a non-section game. Mike Lingenfield had Mt. Pleasant's other extra base hit -- his was a third inning double which drove in a run.
Greensburg Central Catholic 7, Ford City 0
Greensburg Central Catholic (10-2, 8-1) remains atop of Section 3-AA by one game with its win over Ford City (4-7, 3-6). Lori Lantzy struck out 10 for GCC.
