Sports Spotlight: Lexy Herron
School : Chartiers Valley
Claim to fame: Herron scored 15 points in Chartiers Valley's 59-38 victory over South Fayette earlier this month and had 12 points in the Colts' 54-28 victory against Montour. Herron has been a 3-point machine this season, making five and scoring 19 points against Beaver. She also hit the game-winning shot against State College in December.
"She's just a very, very gifted player," coach Spencer Stefko said. "If she plays in college, she'll be gifted defensively in college, as well. ... She has a court presence that's very calming to our young team. She knows what to do and when to do it. She doesn't have to have the ball at all times. She's a joy to have on the team."
Have 3-pointers always come easy? "No, they actually haven't," Herron said. "I don't know what it is this year, because I really haven't worked on them a whole lot. I've made them in the past, but not as good as it's been this year."
How many practice shots per week? "We shoot a lot at practice. But it really hasn't been more than what it's been in past years. We probably shoot three times a week, and we shoot around before every game."
Selected a college yet? "I have not. I've looked at and I applied to Ohio State and Penn State, so far."
Basketball in the future: "I haven't decided if I'm going to play in college yet. If I would go to those two (schools), it would not be for basketball."
College major: "I want to go for accounting."
If given the chance to leave Pittsburgh winters, where would she go• "Maybe somewhere down south where it's warm, and it's not snowing. I could go out, relax and get away from school."
