Hull named co-general manager of Stars
Brett Hull is once again in an important position at a crucial time for the Dallas Stars. Hull and Les Jackson were both made interim co-general managers of the Stars after the team fired Doug Armstrong on Tuesday. Armstrong, the Stars' general manager since 2002, was let go after a disappointing 7-7 start following a third straight exit in the first round of the playoffs. He left team headquarters in suburban Frisco without comment.
Sean Avery of the New York Rangers denied making cancer-related comments to ill Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake before a pregame altercation between the clubs last weekend Avery exchanged words and shoves with Blake and his Toronto teammate Darcy Tucker during warmups before New York's 3-2 shootout victory over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night. The FAN 590, an all-sports radio station in Toronto, reported Monday that an unnamed Rangers player said Avery started the pregame scuffle with comments directed against Blake, who was recently diagnosed with a form of leukemia.
"I am extremely upset and hurt that false and damaging comments were attributed to me regarding Jason Blake," Avery said yesterday. "I made no such comments. "
The NHL fined Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky $10,000 yesterday and suspended Phoenix defenseman Nick Boynton for a game as a result of an altercation in Monday night's 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
Former Penguins forward John LeClair pleaded not guilty yesterday to drunken driving. LeClair, 38, of Haverford, Pa., was arrested Oct. 24 in Milton and charged with DUI after refusing a blood-alcohol test, police said.
