Pirates activate Sanchez from disabled list
CINCINNATI -- The Pirates activated second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the 15-day disabled list following the team's 7-5 loss to the Reds this afternoon.
To make room for Sanchez, the Pirates optioned Ryan Doumit to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sanchez, who has been recovering from a sprained right knee ligament suffered during spring training, will join the Pirates on Sunday for the finale of their three-game series with the Reds. Manager Jim Tracy did not say if Sanchez would be in the starting lineup.
The NL batting champion joined Indianapolis on Thursday for a rehabilitation assignment. He went 1 for 2 with a double in his first game, but scheduled games yesterday and today were postponed because of cold weather.
General manager Dave Littlefield said Sanchez, who was eligible to come off the DL today, had wanted more at-bats at the minor-league level before rejoining the Pirates.
"We were following his lead," Littlefield said. "But with the weather, he has a better chance to play here. At some point, we had to make the call."
