Notebook: Taylor beginning to do little things

| Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004

Defensive backs coach Darren Perry said it was attention to detail, "little things" that contributed to cornerback Ike Taylor's demotion in the defensive backs rotation, and he said Taylor has been practicing well since then. "I think it hit home," Perry said. "It's made him a little hungrier." Perry also stressed that the Steelers haven't given up on Taylor for the long term. "By no means have we lost faith in him," Perry said. "We think he's going to be a good football player for us."

  • Free safety Chris Hope on the potential effects of the season-ending hit he delivered on Miami running back Lamar Gordon (separated shoulder) last Sunday: "I hope that sends a message for the entire Pittsburgh Steelers' defense that we're going to be aggressive, fast and dictate the tempo of the game." Hope also said that his nickname used to be "Hammer," but not because he was a hard hitter. "An uncle gave it to me," Hope said. "I had a big head and a little body when I was growing up."

  • Other than the downgrading of linebacker Kendrell Bell (groin) to "out" Friday, the Steelers' injury report remained unchanged. Quarterback Tommy Maddox (elbow) is out, safety Mike Logan (hamstring) is questionable and defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen (hip pointer) is probable.

  • The Steelers in conjunction with the Salvation Army will be accepting donations prior to their game Sunday against AFC North-rival Cincinnati Bengals. Steelers players' wives and clearly-identified representatives from the Carlynton High School football team will be collecting the donations at each of the three gates to Heinz Field. Fans can make cash or check donations to benefit the flood-relief efforts in the Pittsburgh area.
