New in equipment: Calling Coaches
Because not every sportsmen can afford to have his own personal coach to teach him how predator and turkey calls should sound, Buck Gardner Calls has come up with electronic ones. Pocket-sized devices -- they measure 3 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide -- each digital "calling coach" has four buttons that, when pushed, makes a call that sportsmen can try to repeat them on their own. The predator call includes coyote pup, bird, cottontail and jackrabbit sounds. The turkey call includes ground scratching, scratch and purr, purr, and yelp reproductions. The Calling Coaches are loud and come with a place to attach a lanyard. They run on a hearing aid battery that should last 3,000 "pushes" before running out. Lure type: Ultralight crankbait
Sizes and colors: These lures weigh 1/16-ounce and are 1 1/4 inches long and come in four colors: frog tad, shad tad, chartreuse tad, and pink tad.
Target species: Trout, bass and panfish.
Technique: These lures are meant to work best with ultralight gear, so use light line -- four-pound test or lighter -- to cast them around the edges of rocks, downed timber and weeds.

Notable: Tadfry lures come with a size 12 treble hook and run one to three feet deep when cranked. The ones in the bright colors were designed for trout, while the more naturally-colored ones are meant for panfish and bass.

Bowhunters need to get close to their game, and that's not easy if the target is a Pennsylvania whitetail. Their keen noses can detect scent by the molecule. That's why it's important to have the wind in your favor. But how to tell which way the wind is blowing• Try this trick: tie a small length of sewing thread to your stabilizer. The tiny thread will show you shifts in the wind while remaining unnoticeable to your prey.
Recipe of the week
• crescent rolls
• melted butter
• an 18-inch stick
• tin foil
Directions: Cover the stick with the tin foil as smoothly as possible. Wrap the crescent roll tightly around the stick, then cook it over the fire until it turns a golden brown. When it seems to be ready, pour the melted butter over the crescent roll and sprinkle it with the cinnamon and sugar. Push the brown bear off the stick and onto a plate to eat.
