Man jumps from bridge
A North Charleroi man reportedly jumped from the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge early today after his mother and a friend were unable to rescue him.
Marcus V. Tyree, 22, of 545 Isabell Ave., threatened to jump from the bridge at about 12:30 a.m. while his mother, Lisa Martin, and a friend, Jason Stinogle, both of Monessen, tried to reason with him.
While sitting on a rail on the bridge, Tyree said an argument with his girlfriend led to the suicide attempt, police said.
"Tyree stated that he was going to do it and went backwards off the rail," a Monessen police report stated.
Stinogle grabbed Tyree's leg momentarily but lost his grip, according to the report.
Tyree fell onto a concrete pillar below the bridge and remained conscious, lying face up and moving his arms, police said.
"About a minute later, Tyree rolled off the pillar into the water. He was treading water and asked that the boats would hurry because he could not stay afloat," the police report said.
Tyree's cries for help could be heard for about 10 minutes as he floated toward the Donora-Monessen Bridge, police said.
Police, river rescue teams, a tugboat and helicopters searched the area until about 2 a.m. this morning, when the search was suspended.
Recovery efforts resumed late this morning.
