MHS coach, player in all-star game
That's because the Greyhound coach and the Greyhound senior will be taking part in the prestigious Born 2 Run All-Star Classic, which will be held this weekend at LaRoche College.
The Born 2 Run Classic, which took over for the former Dapper Dan Roundball Classic.
Salvino will serve as a coach of The Storm, which will play The Bomb Squad in the 2 p.m. preliminary game on Sunday. Williams, a 6-1 guard, will be one of the players on The Storm.
Salvino has coached at Monessen for 17 years, compiling a record of 344-120. His teams have won two WPIAL and two PIAA championships.
This season he guided the Greyhounds to a 22-6 record and the WPIAL Class A crown.
Williams, who has started on the varsity squad for three years, averaged 10 ppg. He was a leader by example on the court and one of the top defensive players on the team.
'It's always an honor to get picked to coach in one of these games,' said Salvino. 'And for Tory, it certainly is an honor to play with some of the best players in the state.
'It will be a good way for him to cap his career. It will be an experience he will remember.'
In the 4 p.m. feature, Team Pennsylvania will take on Team USA.
Joining Salvino as coach of The Storm will be Keystone Oaks' Ben O'Connor.
Among the WPIAL players on the team, along with Williams, include Mike McBride (Avonworth), Patrick O'Connor (Keystone Oaks), Steve Connell and Nick Tomsko (Montour), Greg DiGioia (Vincentian), Steve Scorpion (Franklin Regional) and Lou Hill (Wilkinsburg).
Coaching The Bomb Squad will be Brownsville's Pete Logan and Greensburg Central Catholic's Bill Burkhart.
WPIAL members on the squad include Brownsville's George Lemon, Upper St. Clair's Eric Atman, Avonworth's Mario Fulton, Greensburg C.C.'s Jeff Mroz, OLSH's Bill Metz and Wilkinsburg's Mike Terry.
Team Pennsylvania features Montour's Darren Tielsch, Mt. Lebanon's Tyler Bluemling, Aliquippa's Josh Lay, Berlin Brothers Valley's Travis Eisentrout, Sto-Rox's Eddie Peterson, Schenley's Shawn Higgins, Shady Side Academy's Mark Lovett. Crispus Attacks' Chris Charles, Allentown C.C.'s Danny Hinds, Central Catholic's Carlos Cogsdell, Kennedy Christian's Gary Satterwhite and Pine-Richland's Allan MacQuarrie.
Tielsh has signed with Penn State. Charles, a 7-0 center, has signed with Seton Hall.
Among the all-stars for Team USA are Villanova recruit Kyle Wilson of White Rock (Canada) Christian Academy, Clemson recruit Olu Babalola from St. Augustine (N.J.) Prep, Duquesne recruit Shaeem McNair of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Shami Gill of Toronto (Canada) High, who is being recruited by Arizona State and Washington State.
The games will be played Sunday, but the itinerary for the Born 2 Run Classic starts Friday with practices for Team USA and Team Pennsylvania from 8-10 p.m. at LaRoche College.
On Saturday, there will be a morning shoot around (10-10:30 a.m.). From 10:30 to noon, the USA and Pennsylvania teams practice again. From noon to 2 p.m., practices for Bomb Squad and Storm teams will be held.
From 6-6:30 p.m., evening shoot around will be held. The teams will again practice from 6:30-7:15 and then scrimmage from 7:15-8:30.
Then, starting at 8:30, a 3-point shooting contest and a slam dunk contest will be held.
All events are open to the public.
