4 all-stars from Redd Dawgs team
So, far this has not been a season to remember for Redd Dawgs in the Fayette County League as the team has a 5-11 record going into today's game at Mill Run.
However, that didn't stop the league managers from recognizing that manager Dan Palm has some talented players on his roster.
Four members of the Fayette City-based team were named to the 25-member County League All-Star team, including two starters and two pitchers.
The Fayette County All-Stars will take on the Penn-Mar League All-Stars Friday at Garrett County Community College in Maryland. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m.
Picked to start from Redd Dawgs were third baseman Brandon DePhillips and second baseman Pat Palcovic.
The pitchers on the all-star team include Craig Comforti and Tim Latham.
DePhillips, a graduate of Yough and a member of St. Vincent's baseball team, is batting .302. He has six extra-base hits and has 10 RBI for Redd Dawgs.
Palcovic is Redd Dawgs' leading hitter with a .406 average.
Comforti has just a 1-3 record for Redd Dawgs. However, he has 27 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched and has a sparkling ERA of 1.70.
Latham, a Belle Vernon Area graduate who pitched also for Potomac State College, is 0-1 with a 1.58 ERA for Redd Dawgs in three starts. Latham is expected to continue his collegiate career at Walsh University in Ohio.
Latham will pitch today at Mill Run (8-9).
Bud Murphy's (12-1) has the most players on the team with eight. The team will be run by Hopwood manager Dan Kupets and Bud Murphy's manager Tom Sankovich.
"I didn't think, because our record, that we would have two starters in the infield, but the other managers were really in support of it," said Palm. "I guess that says a lot for those two players. They were very deserving."
As for having two pitchers on the team, Palm said that the general consensus of the managers at the meeting was that Redd Dawgs probably could have had more pitchers make the team.
"Our pitching is our strength," Palm said. "Our team ERA is 2.17. I have seven pitchers I can run out there against anyone. If I didn't have the pitchers I do, we'd be 0-16 instead of 5-11."
