BVA girls rout Uniontown, 12-0

| Monday, Sept. 11, 2006

Belle Vernon Area High's girls' soccer team had a fun time Saturday.

Not Monessen High's boys.

That was the area weekend story in a nutshell.

BVA (4-0, 2-0) stayed unbeaten with a 12-0 romp over Uniontown at Jim Weir Stadium in Class AAA Section 6, while Monessen was a 3-2 exhibition loser to Laurel Highlands.

The Lady Leps scored early and often in their tuneup for tonight's section contest at once-beaten Connellsville.

"Our girls got some good time in," coach Paul Sasko said. "We were able to once again get a look at the younger girls."

Sasko subbed frequently from the start as most of his roster played in the opening half. His starters were out a couple minutes into the second half.

Despite the blowout, Sasko wishes he could have gotten his starters some closer game experience.

"We will benefit from playing in close games," Sasko said. "I want the girls to be in different game situations."

Aimee Radic led the way for the Lady Leps with four goals and two assists. Cori Stark scored twice and had three assists.

Also scoring for BVA were Jessica Biddle, Erin Murphy, Michelle Miele, Marla Sasko, Jamie Fordanich and Molly Coneybeer. Ashley Magruda recorded her second straight shutout by stopping five shots.

An Monessen, the injury-plagued Greyhounds (2-2) almost pulled out a win against once-beaten Laurel Highlands (4-1).

"I felt we played well considering we have so many kids out due to injury," coach Sam Perry said. "I honestly feel we should have won the game despite them being a bigger school."

Monessen scored early on a Brent Lenhart breakaway but the Mustangs' Jerrett Pickens tied the contest.

Monessen took a 2-1 lead into the half thanks to a penalty kick by Lenhart after he was tackled in the keeper's box.

It wasn't until the last 20 minutes that Monessen let the game slip away.

Brett Workman knotted the game with Ben Kooser scoring the game-winner with four minutes remaining.

While fatigue was an obvious factor, Perry would not make excuses.

"I'm disappointed we did not win the game," Perry said. "I could make excuses, but what kind of lesson would that teach the kids• We lost and now we have to bounce back."

Monessen hosts Bentworth Tuesday in Class A Section 4.
