Roundup: California's Conway shuts out Geibel
California continues to roll along unbeaten. Not Bentworth.
That was the area high school baseball story in a nutshell Monday.
Junior righthander T.D. Conway blanked Geibel, 6-0, on four hits as California (10-0, 6-0) stayed on top of Class A Section 1.
Conway (3-0) struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.
The Trojans were limited to two hits over the front four innings by Anthony Speeney before getting on the board in the fifth when Dakota Conway singled after Mike Britton singled and went to second on Adam Miller' s sacrifice.
T.D. Conway started the five-run sixth inning with a single.
Matt Bakewell and Tommy Sparrow followed with singles before Britton delivered a two-run single. Miller's double and Dakota Conway's single drove in the other runs.
California finished with 11 hits, with Bakewell doubling and singling and Dakota Conway, Pat Tunney and Britton each adding a pair of singles.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at Geibel.
Serra 6, Bentworth 0
The unbeaten two-time defending WPIAL Class A champs handed the Bearcats their first loss in the Section 2 showdown behind the one-hit pitching of junior Alain Girman, who struck out nine and walked two.
Chris Miller's three-run homer in the fourth inning broke open a 1-0 contest.
Derek Kisell's second-inning single was Bentworh's lone hit.
Serra (8-0, 6-0) has outscored teams, 70-6.
Bentworth (6-1, 4-10 hosts Serra today.
Frazier 11, Fort Cherry 1
The Commodores climbed into third place in Class AA Section 2 with the five-inning romp.
Zach Smalich tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks.
Frazier (5-3, 3-2), which has won three in a row, sandwiched three-run innings in the second and fifth innings around a five-run fourth.
Robert Gondura (triple and double) and Adam Cook (double and single) led the Commodores' attack.
Frazier goes to second place Washington Wednesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
