Monessen has youth - and experience
MONESSEN - Most head coaches would look at their roster, see one senior, and be worried. Not Denny Adam-check, Monessen High's second-year boys' soccer coach.
"We will be very young," said Adamcheck. "But at the same time, we return eight starters, so we will be experienced."
Adamcheck noted the team's off-season dedication.
"The guys came to conditioning camp in great shape," said Adamcheck. "Most of them played on spring teams and we can tell the difference."
Playing at the forward positions will be juniors Joey Dalfonso and Mark Stark.
"We will be counting on Joey and Mark to make things happen," said Adamcheck. "Joey is really coming into his own and Mark is very aggressive."
The midfielders will be juniors Jonathan Stark, Travis Ratica and Greg Kabasiak and sophomore Dave Lauteri.
"Our midfielders will be our strength," said Adamcheck. "They play well as a unit."
Three of the Greyhounds' defensive positions are set with juniors Ben Vivio and Lenny Boso and sophomore Steven Gregor.
The fourth defender will be one of three sophomores - Jerry Kifus, Jeff Fers, or Alex Matta. Starting at goalie will be sophomore Matt Stark.
Also seeing playing time for the Greyhounds will be senior Scott Myshin and sophomore Jonathan Lexie.
Myshin will play forward and midfield while Lexie will play where needed.
"The players are really hyped up," said Adamcheck. "They want to improve on last year's record."
The Greyhounds went 6-8 last year, including 4-6 in the section.
"People that watch us this year will see that we know how to play," said Adamcheck. "Our numbers are up and that helps to make better competition in practice. That makes our team better.
"We might be young, but we should be pretty good."
