Lions distribute Easter hams to the needy
Needy families in New Kensington, Arnold and Lower Burrell received 100 free hams as part of an Arnold Lions Club service project Saturday morning.
The club members raised money to buy the hams through its bingo games, held Monday and Saturday evenings at the Sons of Italy in New Kensington.
They chose the recipients from a list of names and addresses of needy people given to them by local churches, said Tony Green, secretary of the Arnold Lions.
Saturday's ham distribution resembled the Lions' Christmas service project, in which needy families get a ham and a pie. On this project, recipients also received one Easter basket per household.
Elsewhere Saturday morning, nearly 150 children in kindergarten through third grade scavenged for Easter eggs at Peoples' Library in New Kensington. If children found five eggs, they got a prize from the Easter Bunny.
No one went away without a prize, said Green, a New Kensington resident who also is chairman of the New Kensington Recreation Commission.
