Plum continues hot start under first-year coach
PLUM -- Senior infielder Mike McKee's two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday scored Brian Churilla with the go-ahead run as Plum defeated Hempfield, 5-4, in a nonsection game to continue its strong start under first-year coach Carl Vollmer.
Plum improved to 5-0 as senior outfielder Phil Mains and senior second baseman Steve Beckett each had two hits. Mains doubled, and Beckett tripled to back a solid effort by five Mustang pitchers.
Andy Harris pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up the win, but starter Scott Kachurik, Mike Cable, Ryan Webb and Scott McGough also contributed on the mound. McGough, a freshman, picked up his third save, after a scoreless seventh.
Those pitchers held Hempfield to six hits.
"Our relief pitching has been exceptional," Vollmer said. "We've been able to get leads and hold on.
"I think the nice thing is that we've outhit opponents and outpitched them. I think that shows that we can win games in a variety of ways."
Plum, which is 1-0 in Section 4-AAAA, resumes section play Monday against Franklin Regional.
Casey Jackson also doubled, and Tom Wyant tripled for Valley, which has won two straight.
Sharrock, who also had a two-base hit, pitched two innings.
Valley, which led 7-0, had 10 hits after posting just 15 in its first four games.
