Springdale coach makes solid debut
Jerry Concannon had often wondered what it would be like to be a head coach.
This season, Concannon made his debut at the helm, and it couldn't have turned out much better.
Concannon, with his calm, positive demeanor, led Springdale's girls soccer team to a 22-4-1 record, a runner-up finish in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs and a trip to the state semifinals.
For an outstanding debut, Concannon is the Valley News Dispatch Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.
"I had been offered head coaching positions in the past, but I was perfectly content to be an assistant," said Concannon, 36, who was an assistant at North Allegheny last season.
"But when this opportunity presented itself, the timing was right. I knew Springdale had some decent players. I felt this team was looking for something as much as I was looking for something."
Concannon was assisted by Kelly Schaults, who also came to Springdale this season.
Before this year, Springdale had not made the WPIAL playoffs since 2001.
Concannon runs Quick Skills Soccer, which organizes camps and clinics in western Pennsylvania. He is knowledgeable and has a passion for his sport.
