Gannon's McKendree nears 100 victories

Gannon redshirt senior 165-pounder Zack McKendree (Kiski Area) will try to become the fifth wrestler in the Division II school's history to reach 100 career wins when the Golden Knights host Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Thursday.

McKendree, a three-time NCAA Division II national qualifier, was 4-2 and recorded his 99th career win Saturday at the Simonson Open at Ashland University. He is 23-9 this season. He finished his high school career with 131 wins.

Redshirt senior 141-pounder A.J. Milanak (Kiski Area) is 7-4 this season for the Golden Knights. Milanak is ranked No. 8 in the nation in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

Senior Megan Knox (Fox Chapel) was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week on Sunday. For the Division III Gators, Knox took home four first-place finishes -- 50-yard freestyle, 500 free, 1650 free and 200 free relay -- during victories over Baldwin-Wallace, Case Western Reserve and Hiram last week.

Senior Ellie Hess (Burrell) was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that broke the Division II school's pool record with a time of 4:06.84 during a meet against Division I Canisius last week. Hess also posted a qualifying time (2:02.33) for the PSAC championships in the 200 freestyle.

Men's basketball

Freshman guard/forward Ryan Stanko (Deer Lakes), the 2010 Valley News Dispatch Boys Basketball Player of the Year, has come off the bench in all 18 games for the Division III Gators (5-13, 2-8) and is second on the team with 32 3-pointers. Stanko is averaging 8.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Senior forward Seth Eisner (Fox Chapel), who has started all 18 games, leads the Gators with 37 3-pointers. Eisner is averaging 6.9 points and 1.9 rebounds. Freshman forward Bobby Theiss (Plum), who has started two games, is averaging 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.

Through Sunday, freshman 6-foot-1 forward Britta Emberg (Kittanning) was averaging 3.0 minutes per game and had scored four points and grabbed three rebounds for the Division I Colonials.
