Sophomore Natalie Beilstein (Knoch) tied for second in the vault and floor exercise to help the Wolverines win the six-team NCAA Ann Arbor Regional Championships. Beilstein scored 9.875 in the vault and 9.900 in the floor exercise. Michigan will compete in the 12-team national championships on April 15-17 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Senior first baseman/catcher Sarah Spiering (Burrell) has posted the second-best batting average for the Division II Vulcans (19-7). In 26 starts, Spiering is hitting .400 with five home runs and 20 RBI.
Sophomore third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Knoch) is hitting a team-leading .413 with one home run, six doubles and 10 RBI for the Division III Wolverines (8-6). Sophomore pitcher-first baseman Lauren Clarke (Burrell) is second with a .375 average, two doubles and six RBI. Clarke also has emerged as the team's top pitcher with a 6-2 record, 2.86 ERA and one save in 10 appearances.
Track and field
Junior Lauren Butler (Kiski Area) started the outdoor season by winning the shot put and taking second in the javelin for the Division III Gators at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational in San Diego, Calif. She threw 39 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the shot and 125-5 in the javelin.
Freshman Nick Gentile (Freeport) broke the Division I school's record and finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.14 in the Colonials' outdoor season opener at the Wake Forest Invitational. The old record of 1:54.19 was set by Lonnie Smith in 1994.
