Hip-hop event brings history, culture to Pitt

James “Fedd The God” Fedd, a North Side native who lives in Tarentum at the launch of an ice cream flavor named after him at Happy Day Dessert Factory on Pittsburgh’s North Side on April 3.

The University of Pittsburgh is teaming up with 1HoodMedia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the emergence of hip-hop.

“This Thing We Call Hip-Hop” will take place at the Black Box Theater at 460 Melwood Ave., in Oakland.

Artists and academics will come together in a discussion, hosted by Chantel Petersen, known as “PopChanny,” to talk about the importance of the genre, its development through the ages, and Pittsburgh’s influence on it.

Fedd the God, Hardo, Paradise Gray, SpeciàlK, are all scheduled to make appearance, as well as Dr. Margaret J. Starkes, known as “The Rapping Principal”.

The 26-year-old Fedd the God is a Northview Heights native that began his journey with hip-hop back in 2005. He recently signed onto the Taylor Gang imprint under well known rapper Wiz Khalifa.

In 1987, Dr. Margret J. Starkes, was the first woman to release a rap song in her city. She currently works as a Pittsburgh educator and writer, and is well known for her back to school videos.

The event will also feature videos of Pitt’s alumni, faculty, and staff discussing their own experiences with the genre.
