KDKA-TV veteran John Shumway will take over the weekend evening anchor desk this summer.

The change in KDKA’s weekend anchor lineup comes after longtime weekend anchor Paul Martino was reassigned to weekday general assignment reporting and subsequently opted to retire July 1. KDKA reporters Bryant Reed and Royce Jones frequently anchored in Martino’s place.

Shumway’s start date for weekend evenings has not been determined.

In addition to weekend evenings, Shumway will continue to be involved in morning news broadcasts on KDKA and WPCW-TV on Wednesday through Friday.

Shumway’s absence in the mornings on Monday and Tuesday will necessitate additional changes at the CBS affiliate as will the retirement of weekday evening anchor Stacy Smith, whose last newscast is tentatively set for May 26.

KDKA general manager Chris Cotugno said the station has a plan for how its weekday evening newscasts will look after Smith’s retirement and he expects that will be announced later this month.
