TV Q&A: Is that a WPXI-TV reporter in a WQED-TV documentary?
Trib Total Media TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions every Wednesday at TribLive.com in a column that also appears in the Sunday Tribune-Review.
Question: My wife and I were watching WQED-TV’s “Portraits for the Home Front: The Story of Elizabeth Black,” which originally aired in 2013.
Elizabeth was a well-known portrait artist from Pittsburgh who joined the American Red Cross during World War II. Much of her lost creations were uncovered by the work of one of her sons and daughter-in-law. There is a portion of the documentary at approximately 39:00-41:00 that shows interns from colleges around Pittsburgh working on finding families to help get portrait prints to them.
One of the interns is identified as Sarafina from Point Park University. I mentioned to my wife that the intern looked enough like WPXI-TVs Sarafina James (with nine years from filming to now) that it might be her.
It would be great to find out if it is indeed Sarafina James, her thoughts on how it feels to have worked on such a historically significant project and how it feels helping to get these prints back to the families.
— Dave, Clarion
Rob: Yes, that Point Park University student did grow up to become WPXI-TV reporter Sarafina James. She did not respond to several emails regarding Dave’s question.
Q: When local news like KDKA-TV plays that little breaking news theme, is someone somewhere getting royalties for that?
— Joyce, Scott Township
Rob: My understanding is when it comes to incidental music used in TV newscasts, stations pay for that music outright and do not pay royalties on every use.
Q: Is A&E ever going to broadcast new episodes of “60 Days In” or has the show been canceled?
— Lucas, via email
Rob: “60 Days In” kicks off its seventh season at 9 p.m. Aug. 18 with seven formerly incarcerated citizens going behind bars at the Henry County Jail in McDonough, Ga., “to help pinpoint the problems and assist the new sheriff with a reconnaissance mission in the facility.”
A new series follows at 10 p.m., though it sounds like a gag from “30 Rock.” In “Inmate to Roommate,” six ex-cons are released from prison and “move in with people they barely know for a second chance at life on the outside,” per A&E.
Q: Will there be new “Garage Squad” episodes on MotorTrend TV?
— Mick, Jeannette
Rob: While a full library of “Garage Squad” episodes are available on MotorTrend+, the show appears to be in limbo and has not been renewed for another season.
Q: I have a Roku TV device in my bedroom, and I subscribe to Comcast. What station carries Retro TV? The website is almost impossible to use.
— Eric via Facebook
Rob: In Pittsburgh, Retro TV is on low-power channel WPTF, Channel 69.3. Cable/satellite companies do not typically carry low-power channels and, to my knowledge, none carry this particular channel. There also is a Retro TV web feed at getafteritmedia.com/retro-live-feed, and Retro TV is available as a streaming channel on Roku.
