TV Q&A: What happened to a news anchor’s wedding ring?

Turns out WTAE reporter/anchor Kelly Sasso is no fan of most jewelry, including rings.

Trib Total Media TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions every Wednesday at TribLive.com in a column that also appears in the Sunday Tribune-Review.

Q: I’ve noticed Kelly Sasso is no longer wearing her wedding ring? What’s the scoop on this?

— Michael via Twitter

Rob: Don’t get too excited, Michael.

“I am still very happily married to Nicolas Sasso, my husband of almost 10 years,” Sasso writes via email. “The truth is … I have never liked the feeling of wearing jewelry, including rings (I should have told Nic that before he proposed! We could have saved some cash). About the only embellishment I can tolerate are earrings because I can’t feel them. The final straw for me was covid. I was taking my rings off constantly to wash my hands, and it became too much of a pain. Lucky for me, Nic is a very secure and understanding husband.”

I appreciate Sasso’s game response. For the record, I’m not wild about prying into TV anchors/reporters and their personal lives except when it’s related to something that impacts what viewers see on air (e.g. an MIA anchor, a pregnancy, an injury or in this case a wedding ring, etc.).

Q: Why does David Muir seem to have his right hand “Gorilla Glued” to his desk? He may occasionally move it, but immediately returns it to the flat position on the desk. It’s become a distraction whenever I watch “ABC World News Tonight.”

— Rick, New Castle

Rob: How Muir situates his right hand does seem to impact Rick’s viewing experience, but the tone of the question, however funny, is unlikely to elicit a response. An ABC publicist did not respond to Rick’s query.

Q: I really enjoyed the 7:30 p.m. news on KDKA with Meghan Schiller. It was not just a rehash/replay of news stories already aired but had interesting feature stories and great interviews. Meghan was wonderful. So where has she been for almost three weeks?

— Sharon, Mt. Washington

Rob: Schiller posted to her Facebook account last week that she took time off to spend with her Marine husband following his deployment to Syria/Iraq. TV news anchors get vacation time, too.

Q: What happened to forecaster Danielle Dozier on Channel 11? I just noticed a new TV ad showing Scott, Stephen and Jessica, but not Danielle. Did she move on?

Also, why is Kristin Emery still working from home? And did Mary Ours have her baby?

— Kay via email

Rob: I reported in May that Dozier chose to leave WPXI. She did not say if she had lined up a new job at that time. Her most recent Instagram posts are photos from a vacation in Honduras. On Facebook, she says she is relocating but doesn’t say to where.

Emery traveled out of state, and KDKA company policy dictates that employees work from home and quarantine for a week after out-of-state travel. So if you see folks who previously have been in the studio suddenly working from home, adherence to this policy is probably the reason for it.

Ours gave birth to Wally on March 28. She’ll be back on air at KDKA in early August.
